Camera Obscura First Visitor Attraction in Scotland Awarded Wellness Charter
Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is proud to announce its recent recognition as a leader in workplace wellbeing, having been awarded the prestigious Wellness Charter by Hospitality Health. This makes Camera Obscura the first visitor attraction in Scotland to earn this distinction, underscoring the five star visitor attractions commitment to the health and wellbeing of staff.
Established in 2018, Hospitality Health is a Scottish charity dedicated to enhancing mental health within the hospitality and tourism sectors. Their Wellness Charter identifies and honours businesses that actively support their employees' mental wellbeing through effective practices and policies.
The hospitality and tourism industry is often challenging, with demanding hours and significant pressures affecting work-life balance. Hospitality Health is pivotal in shifting industry perspectives towards a more empathetic understanding of mental health, providing essential tools and support to foster a healthier workplace.
Camera Obscura & World of Illusions have implemented a comprehensive support system for staff that not only addresses immediate workplace needs but also considers the broader context of their lives outside work. Wellbeing initiatives include mental health first aiders, regular wellness training, welfare meetings, and continuous development opportunities for all team members.
Irena Navrocka, Assistant Manager at Camera Obscura & World of Illusions, expressed her enthusiasm at receiving the award. “Receiving the Wellness Charter from Hospitality Health is a great honour. At Camera Obscura, we prioritize the wellbeing of our staff, who in turn take wonderful care of our visitors. We're thrilled to collaborate with Gordon and his team, who share our passion for supporting those in the industry."
Gordon McIntyre from Hospitality Health highlighted the charity's mission, saying “What we are trying to achieve with Hospitality Health is to equip the hospitality and tourism sector with the right tools and mental health first aid training to not only address mental health but to put staff welfare first. We launched Hospitality Health in Glasgow 6 years ago with 120 operators in attendance and we have grown considerably, post-pandemic, with a real need for mental health support.”
Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is a 5-star VisitScotland rated visitor attraction in the heart of Edinburgh and is the 7th most visited paid attraction in Scotland. Housed in an historic building, it offers visitors the chance to get hands-on with over 100 interactive illusion exhibits and see a demonstration of the 171-year-old Camera Obscura and outstanding panoramic views of the city from the Rooftop Terrace. It has something to entertain all ages and is open every day from early until late, all year.
